His father, Rabbi Yechezkel Sharaga Kahane, was born in Safed, Palestine, Ottoman ( In today's Israel), in 1905 and went into Polish and Czech Studies yeshiva religious schools. Later he emigrated to the United States, where he served as rabbi of two communities. Meir received his rabbinic ordination from the Mir Yeshiva in Brooklyn, and graduated with a BA inPolitical Science from Brooklyn College.
