Teachers Explore New Methods for Teaching Literacy in Long Island Schools

Sachem School District teachers completed another professional development activity thanks to the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. The program is called the Strategic Instructional Model (SIM) and looks at how teachers can improve literacy in young achievers

The Strategic Instructional Model

Developed more than 25 years of research, working SIM help teachers recognize the lessons of the utmost importance, and target those teaching in the direction ofa heterogeneous group of learners. SIM is based on four philosophical principles:

• Low skills students can be taught in mainstream classes.

• Teacher's aides, or support the teacher, should evolve to supporting students' learning strategies.

• Subject teachers should organize their classes so that the material can be understood and remembered by low students.

• Students should use when deciding how to learn a new part to beStrategies.

SIM card works on two levels, one addressing the needs of teachers and the other to the needs of the student. SIM provides training for teachers a method for organizing information in a way that most students are useful to help them understand what they can learn and can then use it to accomplish tasks. For students, academic coaching develops learning strategies, what they learn can be applied in the school. The strategies range from ways to learnUpon written concept, texts, including information and readings, and mathematics word problems, and to express ways to provide information in written form, as is often required on standardized tests.

Another important element of the SIM card is the way that it promotes teamwork among teachers, pupils and parents. When deciding what content to teach, working students, teachers and students to determine what information students need and provide what the best method to that information. This creates anFeeling of camaraderie in the learning community and helps all stakeholders contribute to the overall success of students.
